Q: HOW DO I AVOID WINTER HOME DAMAGE?
Ice dams may not exactly be a household word, but they cost the public millions
of dollars each year, when ceilings and walls are ruined as a result of winter
water seepage.
Ice dams usually form when warmth from inside a home causes snow on the roof
to melt and trickle to the roof's edge, where it freezes, blocking gutters
and drains. Since water cannot flow over the built-up ice, it seeps into the
home under the shingles.
If your house is susceptible to ice dams, it's a good idea to take action
in the fall before weather conditions threaten your home.
Steps to take in the fall
- Keep all gutters and downspouts clear. Make certain that leaves, sticks
and debris are removed completely from your home's gutters and downspouts.
- Keep your attic chilly. The most effective way to eliminate ice dams is
to stop smowmelt by making the roof colder. This can be achieved by insulating
the floor of the attic and under the roof, and by blocking all crevices (known
as "bypasses") where warm air from the interior can rise into the attic.
- Identify water entry points within the home. You may wish to contact a
contractor to locate these entry points and take the appropriate actions
to create a waterproof barrier.
Steps to take in the winter
- If possible, use a roof rake or push broom to reduce the amount of snow
that could melt. Do not stand on a ladder or climb on the roof to clear the
snow, as serious injury may result. Also, be cautious of electrical wires.
- To melt the ice, bring new life to an old set of legs. It may sound strange,
but placing old nylon stockings filled with snow-melting chemicals on an
ice dam is an effective way to melt the dam and create a channel for the
water to run off. Be certain to lay the stockings perpendicular to the gutter
near the edge of the roof.
- In an emergency situation, when water is seeping into the house, the best
advice is to notify a professional contractor.
Q: WHY SHOULD I CLEAN OUT MY GUTTERS?
Your (Gutter/Downspout) system was designed to catch the (maximum) flow of
water from your roof. If your gutters are clogged, the water has no where to
go except either (over) your gutters or (underneath) your facia board (roof
line). It will find it's way around or in your foundation or inner walls not
to mention windows. We can't begin to tell you how may people hire roofers
and make unnecessary calls (ONLY) to receive a report of your gutters need
to be cleaned out.
Q: HOW IMPORTANT IS DOWNSPOUT OPENING?
VERY!!! Many companies will clean out your gutters. But unfortunately they don't even bother with your downspouts. Which is only doing 50% of your job. Your (Downspouts) are designed to take the water (Safely) away from your property's dwelling. If your (Downspouts) are not properly opened and flowing, the water will back up find it's way over or underneath your gutter system. It will find its way inside. And we (ALL) have watched enough news reports on flooded basements and internal water damage.
Q: HOW OFTEN SHOULD I CLEAN MY GUTTERS?
It is important to do this (2) times pr. Yr.
- SPRING SUMMER: (Preventative and General maintenance.) Very important. Especially if you skipped the (Late Fall) clean up and the (Spring and Summer) foliage accumulates. We also can use the water for flushing and do repairs if necessary.
- LATE FALL: (General maintenance) This cleaning is (VITAL) to your property. Since the winters here are usually harsh, your gutters if not serviced (PROPERLY) will cause damage to your home. Since (ALL) trees shed their leaves and debris at this time of season it's important with rain and most notably the snow storms that (ALL) water needs to flow properly. Many people call us in the dead of winter with many problems of (Water damage) and (Ice damming) problems. This can be avoided if your Gutters and Downspouts are properly maintained.
Q: HOW DOES A.J,'S CLEAN MY GUTTERS?
Always by (HAND). With (NO MESS). We have (2) ways of cleaning your gutters.
- By using our ladders
- By roof
If the (roof) is strong and sturdy we will walk it to give us the best look and way to get your gutters/downspouts cleaned out and opened. Or we may use our ladders all the way around if needed.
REST ASSURED A.J.'S IS ALWAYS CAREFUL.
PROCESS: We have (2) types according to the season:
- (Spring/Summer/Early Fall) (03/10 - 11/15)
When we start off cleaning out all gutters by (Hand), we use buckets and bags to put the debris into. Then, we check out all downspouts to make sure they are opened and flowing. If the downspouts are clogged we will un-clog them. Usually the water hose will do the trick. If it does not, we will either rod out the downspout or disassemble them to get them cleared. Once all gutters are cleaned and downspouts are opened we will use the water hose to flush out all gutters to get them as clean as could be. This also helps us out to catch the problem areas that we will call to your attention. And since we do repair and installation we may even assist in this issue as well (if needed).
- (Late Fall) (11/16 - 12/22)
Same as above except in the (Late Fall) we do not use the water unless the weather permits us and it's necessary. We will get (Downspouts) opened if water is not available. We also do not during this time do any assessments or repair. Due to weather.
Q: IS A.J'S INSURED AGAINST ACCIDENT?
Yes!! We carry (Full) insurance in the case of this happening. We also can provide "certificates of proof" if needed.
Q: DOES A.J'S BAG ALL DEBRIS?
Yes!! In most cases we even use brown bags (environmental bags) so the (local) service will haul it away. Heck, we even sweep around your property when done.
Q: HOW DOES A.J.'S CHARGE FOR GUTTER CLEANING?
By the dwelling square footage and overall size.
Q: ONCE I HAVE CALLED AND HIRED A.J.'S HOW LONG IS THE WAIT TO RECEIVE MY SERVICE?
This depends on the needs of the client. If there is an emergency we strive to get to your property within (24) hours. Otherwise typically we do get to our (Gutter) jobs within (5) days.
Q: DO I NEED TO BE AT PROPERTY WHEN A.J.'S SHOWS UP?
Yes!! We offer (3) different ways to service your gutters. (Upon receiving written authorization.)
- Just show up during business hours.
- Call client beforehand. Usually done the day of.
- Phone client to set up time/date when available to arrive.
Q: WHAT IF I AM NOT ON PREMISES WHEN A.J.'S ARRIVES. AND WHAT IF AFTER THE GUTTER CLEAN OUT, THERE IS A REPAIR ISSUE THAT NEEDS ATTENTION?
